General surgery is a specialty that deals mostly with diseases of the digestive system, for example, stomach, bowel and appendix. One of the most common operations is the removal of the gallbladder, usually because of gallstones. I use booklets to explain to the patients the diagnosis, reasons for the proposed operation, alternatives, techniques, risks of complications, length of hospital stay and recovery, and follow-up.

Another type of surgery is the repair of hernias, a weakness in the abdominal wall that allows organs, such as the bowel, to bulge out, carrying the risk of becoming incarcerated and causing bowel obstruction. There are several types of hernias. Some babies are born with defects in the groin (inguinal hernia) or the belly button (umbilical hernia). The same types can appear later in life, sometimes  caused by heavy lifting, or after an operation (incisional hernia).

Breast surgery is also one of my interests. Not cosmetic operations, such as breast augmentations, which are performed by plastic surgeons, but the examination and treatment of lumps, cysts, benign tumors and cancer of the breast. Thanks to frequent mammograms, cancer is being discovered earlier and can be often treated with breast conservation, without the need to remove the whole breast (mastectomy).
